What Is a Doula?
Doulas provide nonmedical support alongside your clinical care team. They don't deliver your baby or replace your midwife or OB.

doula
Say it: DOO-luh
A doula is a trained non-medical professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a person and their family before, during, and after childbirth or other major life transitions.
What Kinds of Doula Support Are There?
There are six common kinds, and services differ from one doula to the next. Use these descriptions to decide what to ask for.
Birth doula
Nonmedical emotional and practical support through pregnancy and labor, with clear information at every step.
Postpartum doula
Support with newborn care, rest and the practical needs that come in the weeks after birth.
Overnight postpartum doula
Postpartum support during the night. Ask about shift length and whether the doula stays awake or rests.
Antepartum doula
Extra practical and emotional support during pregnancy, often helpful during bed rest or a complicated pregnancy.
Full-spectrum doula
Support across a wide range of reproductive experiences. Ask which services the doula offers.
Bereavement doula
Compassionate emotional and practical support around pregnancy loss, stillbirth or infant death.
How Do I Choose a Tacoma Doula?
Start with how you feel in the conversation. You should have room to ask questions and explain your preferences. And you should come away knowing exactly what is offered.
Look Beyond a Label
What a doula says they focus on and what they're formally trained in aren't always the same thing. A good consultation makes that clear.
